Cybersecurity Basics for Small Businesses: A Practical Checklist

Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re a small business in South Jersey (or working with a remote team), these basics will reduce your risk fast — without slowing your day-to-day operations.

1) Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Require MFA for email, Microsoft 365/Google Workspace, remote access, and any admin accounts. This blocks most account-takeover attempts even if a password is stolen.

2) Patch operating systems and apps

Enable automatic updates where possible. For business devices, use a managed patching process so critical updates don’t get skipped.

3) Use endpoint protection (EDR/AV)

• Install protection on every computer (and ideally servers).

• Make sure alerts are monitored — not just installed.

4) Back up the right way (and test it)

Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy offsite. Then test restores quarterly.

5) Lock down admin access

• Use separate admin accounts (don’t browse/email as admin).

• Remove local admin rights where possible.

6) Train your team on phishing

Most breaches start with a click. Teach staff to verify unexpected invoices, password reset emails, and ‘urgent’ requests — especially anything involving gift cards or wire transfers.
